Meet the editors 2025!

Writer: SciEnvySciEnvy

Happy belated new year all! The SciEnvy team is back and ready to kick-start 2025.

Find out more about our new co-editors below!

Paula Gardner

I’m a PhD student at the University of East Anglia in the school of biological sciences. I use computational tools to understand the evolutionary history and genetic makeup of red fox populations worldwide. The red fox makes an excellent case study for what makes a species successful, as they occupy habitats all the way from the deserts of North Africa to the Canadian arctic.

My undergraduate degree focused on marine biology, with minors in statistical methods and art history. I rediscovered a childhood interest in genetics right at the end of my undergraduate degree. After taking more math courses to pursue this interest, I then worked in human population genetics during my Masters’ degree.

During this time, I was also a writer for the Loh Down on Science, a science communication radio show broadcast to a listenership of over four million people. I really enjoy making research more accessible and am excited to do this with SciEnvy!

Caitlin Kumiko Dye

I’m a PhD student at the University of Plymouth, based at the Marine Biological Association. My research looks at the interactions between diatoms, their microbiome, and parasites in the water column. I’m using a range of lab- and field-based techniques to investigate the ecological interactions between these organisms. I was originally drawn to marine biology because of the vastness of the subject area; I could learn about global oceanographic processes but also the molecular mechanisms behind marine life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I grew fascinated by the impact that a virus could have on both human health and society, which led me to question the importance of microorganisms in marine systems. I went on to specialise in marine microbiology during my master’s and later worked as a technical writer for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Microbiology Division. I am excited to return to academia, combining my knowledge of marine and clinical microbiology, whilst learning new research techniques.

I discovered my passion for science communication while working as a technical writer. In joining SciEnvy as an editor, I hope to hone my writing abilities by sharing the stories and exciting research of ARIES PhD students.
